We are currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join the laboratory team for three months starting in April 2020 to work on our annual aphid monitoring survey.


BBRO - the go-to source of advice for sugar beet growers

The work of a laboratory technician

Primarily the role will involve identifying aphids caught in the survey.  However, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to help in other areas of the survey including inoculating field trials.  Applicants will need to have an enthusiasm for entomological/insect research.

Attitude and determination

This role is for you if you are keen and self-motivated with a positive, resilient, “can-do” attitude.  You need to be able to diligently follow instructions, carry out tasks with high attention to detail and work effectively under pressure, as this is a fast-paced laboratory with a high throughput of samples.

Skills set needed

As an applicant for this position you should:

  • Have good training in biology or related subject (minimum A-level) or have equivalent experience.
  • Have good attention to detail
  • Apply a flexible working attitude
  • Be willing to learn new techniques
  • Be adept at working to deadlines and in a fast-paced laboratory environment

Desirable but not essential skills:

  • Laboratory experience
  • Aphid/insect sampling and identification

Salary £12 per hour.
